José Luis has a story that is far too common with street children in Honduras. And that is to say, we have no idea what his story is. We don’t know his background, where he was born, if he has siblings, if his parents are alive, when his birthday is, how old his is, how long he has been on the streets, or if he was abused. José Luis suffers from learning disabilities and a mental disorder. He came to Amigos in February of 2008; a city judge who once visited Amigos told our social worker that she recognized him, which leads us to believe he must be from the San Pedro Sula City area (about two hours from our orphanage). Despite these hurdles José Luis has grown and improved immensely since arriving at Amigos. The best example of this would be intellectually: when he arrived, José Luis didn’t even know the alphabet. Now he reads and reads … with others, by himself, in school and in his free time. He is energetic and easily entertained, and loves to dance to the music of Michael Jackson! We celebrate his birthday on December 8th.
