Amigos de Jesus offers a long-term volunteer program to individuals interested in donating their time and talents in service to others.  The goal of our volunteer program is to foster and model a Christian lifestyle centered on the four pillars of spirituality, community, education and health for our children of Amigos de Jesus. Our volunteers commit themselves to work along side our Honduran staff to break the cycle of poverty and violence suffered by our children to raise compassionate, hard working young people who will contribute positively to Honduran society.

Length of service:  The volunteer year begins in early August and ends in late August of the following year.  There is an option for renewal.  Short-term service opportunities are also available.

Service Opportunities: Service placements are based on the volunteer’s interests and the needs of the home.  Possible service opportunities include, but are not limited to: Teachers and tutors (English, Phys Ed, Library, Computers, Art, Music, Special education); Physical, speech, occupational and mental health therapists; Health coordinator (health care background preferred but not required); Communications officer (experience in photography helpful but not required); work in agriculture, engineering, as an administrator/accountant, environmental work, and food services.

All placements involve direct work with the children.

Requirements:  Spanish fluency/proficiency or a willingness to learn Spanish; Willingness to provide the children of our family with an example of Christ’s love.

Benefits: Small stipend, room and board, health insurance, assistance with loan deferment, language school (when applicable).  We ask that volunteers assist with fundraising

Training and Support: Volunteers participate in a 2 week orientation in Honduras, plus 2-3 retreats during the service year.  The directors on-site are an integral part of the program and will plan and direct retreats, provide support, and work with volunteers to help make the experience meet each individual’s personal, spiritual and professional goals when possible.

The Amigos office in the United States will also be in communication with the volunteers to see how they are doing and provide additional support.
