kathryn crawford, VOLUNTEER 2018-2019
Graduated from The Catholic University of America with a B.A. in History and a double minor in English and Theology and Religious Studies in May 2013.
Before coming to Amigos:
Before deciding to come to Amigos, I worked as a Middle School English, History, and Physical Education Instructor in Stafford, Virginia for four years. I sincerely valued working with and learning from the students and families of St. William of York Catholic School (SWOY). They will always hold a very dear place in my heart. The SWOY community has been incredibly supportive of my decision to move to Honduras, and I will be forever grateful for the lessons I learned there that have prepared me for this next chapter.
Motivation for coming to Amigos:
I first visited Amigos during a week-long trip over Christmas Break in 2016. Following my initial visit, I knew that I had encountered an incredibly loving community. During the summer of 2017, I returned to Amigos to lead ‘Escuelita,’ (Little School) the summer camp program for the children of the hogar. The two months I spent living at Amigos with the other summer volunteers changed me in a profound manner. Very often, I thought of the children and staff of Amigos while back in the States. Sharing the children of Amigos and Honduran culture with my students in Virginia was truly (and continues to be) a gift. After some time, prayer, and discussions with encouraging friends, I knew that I wanted to return to Amigos: this time for a longer stay!
This year, I am working as the full-time Librarian at the Bilingual School. It has been quite enjoyable to help the students find “the perfect book,” read aloud to the different classes, and see excited faces ready to ‘entregar’ (return) their books during the recess periods. I also get to assist in the ‘Kinder’ (Preschool) English classroom. Singing songs and playing games with the little ones has been a true blessing. Also, I am the Photographer and Communications Lead for Amigos. I have the opportunity to capture very special moments and smiles around the hogar and share them with the Amigos community in both Honduras and in the United States.
