About the Amigos de Jesús Bilingual School

In 2010, we opened the Amigos de Jesús Bilingual School in Honduras to provide an excellent education for 140 of our own children as well as 110 children from the surrounding communities in Macuelizo. Our students range in age from pre-K to 9th grade as of 2019 and we have continued to add a new grade every year.

We are proud of our rare model where children can have access to a bilingual education — something that normally only upper class families can afford. Amigos de Jesús offers a unique and personalized program that does not exist in the current public school system.

We are looking for native English speakers with a bachelor’s degree (or currently enrolled in college) to make a one-year commitment to teach at our school. Many of our teachers consider their time with us a “gap year” during their college career. The subjects you will teach — including math, science, literature, technology, music, art, and P.E. — are taught in English.

We provide an intensive 6-week summer training program to our volunteer teachers in July. Then from August to June, our teachers like you work alongside our local Honduran staff members inside the classroom.

Requirements

Teaching experience and conversational Spanish are desirable but not required. Your teaching in the classroom will be done in English regardless of the subject (math, science, art etc.). We are most interested in individuals who are resilient, flexible, able to overcome unexpected challenges, and willing to learn and immerse themselves in a different culture. A bachelor’s degree is recommended but we also accept currently enrolled college students as teachers.

Living at Amigos de Jesús

Our volunteer teachers live on the grounds of our home in a house that is home for an intentional community of 3-10 volunteers. The house is a simple but spacious 4-bedroom, 2-bath house with cold running water and electricity. The house has a simple kitchen, washboards for laundry, some space for gardening, an avocado tree, and a front porch with hammocks.

Amigos de Jesús is located just outside the town of Macuelizo in western Honduras, just 9 miles east of the Guatemala border. Macuelizo is situated halfway between the second largest city in Honduras, San Pedro Sula, and the popular tourist destination of Copan Ruinas.

On weekends, our teachers have free times. Teachers can go into the town of Macuelizo for restaurants, salsa dancing, and shopping, or go on jungle hikes. During the holidays, teachers can visit beautiful places such as Utila, Roatan, Lake Yojoa, and Copan.

General Responsibilities

  • Lesson-plan and teach in English all subject areas with the exception of Spanish classes

  • Facilitate relationships with parents and other community members

  • Foster a safe and productive classroom environment for students

  • Serve as a Lunch/Recess monitor

  • Support your fellow teachers in school and at home

Administrative Duties

  • Maintain attendance records for all students in your homeroom

  • File a copy of your weekly lesson plans

  • Provide the Administration with a copy of your weekly class schedule

  • Sign Attendance Book upon entering/leaving school each day (required by law)

  • Ensure classroom is ready for students at beginning of each school day

  • Attend all teacher meetings

  • Keep the Administration informed of any problems or concerns (disciplinary or otherwise) you are having with students

  • Keep student files updated with the necessary information

  • Keep the office informed of extended absences of students

Other Responsibilities

  • Grade exams

  • Collect performance grades from other teachers and prepare report cards

  • Fill out electronic and hard-copy versions of grading spreadsheet

  • Plan and organize extracurricular activities for students

  • Attend Association of Parents Meetings

Qualifications

1. Bachelor’s Degree or currently enrolled in college
2. Native English speaker
3. Strong desire to advocate for and lead children
4. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively
5. Flexibility and ability to adapt to new culture and environment

Teachers fly into Honduras in July to begin their year with a 5-week summer training program. Classes go from August to June.
