¡GANAMOS!
Congratulations to the Amigos de Jesús Girls Soccer Team for their championship win!
Watch the girls score their game-winning goal!
In late 2019, Amigos de Jesús formed a girls soccer team to join a local women’s league. That team went on to finish runner-up despite having a young team of girls between 13 and 17 years old in a league where adult women make up the rest of the teams. Unfortunately, Covid cost this league two full seasons, but late last year it began again. Now with more experience and with reinforcements from the local community, the Amigos team again made it to the final!
The final is played over two games, and the total score determines the champion. The first leg of the final was close by Amigos, and the entire Hogar walked to the game to cheer our girls to a win. Last Saturday was the championship game of the league, and a few of us were lucky enough to watch our girls and their teammates win the tournament!
This game was an “away” game for our girls, so we were only able to take one van with 15 others to the stadium to watch the game. The Amigos team was supported by many people from the local community who traveled to the game as well. Our contingent in the stands was loud, and our three girls who played in the game made a huge impact on the outcome:
Andry played as a midfielder and was up and down the field all game long, controlling plays.
Reina played defense and because she is also very fast was able to make plays along the sideline as well.
Sonia scored the first goal of the game, and was later named the Player of the Game (and received a nice cash prize).
The outcome was never really in doubt, and the Amigos team won this game 2-1, making the total score in the two legs of the final 4-2 Amigos. Our champions were then presented with medals and of course, a big trophy. On the way home, we stopped for a celebratory pizza dinner, and then for the rest of the ride, the happy girls yelled out the car at everyone we passed on the way home, “¡GANAMOS!” - WE WON!
