Help us Rise to the Challenge.

Liliana’s medical expenses were unplanned and far exceed what our operating budget can support. And while we are hopeful seeing Liliana’s progress, her recovery will be long and difficult.

A generous, anonymous donor agreed to match, dollar for dollar, donations to Liliana’s medical care and recovery, up to $40,000.

You helped us unlock this generous grant - thank you!
You can still give to support Liliana’s ongoing medical care.

Rising to the Challenge: Liliana

At 22 years old, Liliana* is a fighter. She is a miracle. Her doctors are hopeful, watching her pull through a health crisis that became the biggest challenge of Liliana’s life. Liliana has Lupus and was first hospitalized on Dec. 22nd, 2023 due to complications of her disease. Her condition worsened, Liliana’s health was failing, and the ADJ leadership team transferred her to a private hospital in the city of San Pedro Sula.

Liliana now had a team of doctors and nurses working around the clock for her care. To-date, she has undergone 4 surgeries and spent 35 days in the ICU.

Update 3/13/2024: Liliana is communicating and recovering physical skills, and perseveres through any setbacks. She is able to travel to doctors’ appointments when needed, and enjoys time in the fresh air at the Hogar during the day.

Her needs still require constant nursing care, and Liliana’s medical team is currently focused on her gaining nutrition and strength.  Liliana will need lifelong medical support for her treatments, medications, and specialized care, and Amigos will continue to provide for Liliana’s ongoing needs throughout her life.

Update 2/28/2024: On Saturday evening, Feb. 24th, Liliana was discharged home to Amigos! Liliana is taking clear steps forward in her recovery and demonstrates her strength of spirit. She is comfortable in the space Hogar Amigos set up for her, and is happy with the nurse hired for her care.

The children of Amigos are making cards and drawings for Liliana, and Liliana’s two younger siblings can visit with her for a few hours. Liliana’s doctors are in disbelief at her progress, but we know that in addition to having great medical care, Liliana also has the best prayer support possible.

Update 2/16/2024: Liliana made great strides this week!  This strong young woman is officially out of the ICU, while still receiving specialized care in the hospital.  Liliana showed certain improvements this week that make us so very hopeful for her recovery.

The Amigos leadership team is working on everything we need to care for Liliana and her recovery at home:  specialized at-home nursing care, medicines and equipment, daily disposable items for Liliana’s needs, etc.

Liliana first arrived home to Amigos de Jesús in 2018, at 16 years old, alongside her younger sister and brother.  She progressed through Amigos de Jesús Bilingual School, and graduated high school in 2023.  Liliana helped part-time to care for the chiquitos (little kids) at the Hogar while ADJ supported her personalized transition to independence plan.  When Liliana’s health failed, Amigos de Jesús became her full support system.

Due to your generosity, our matching grant donor agreed to unlock the full $40,000 gift for Liliana’s medical care – YOU made all the difference!

You can still help to cover Liliana’s ongoing medical care with your donation.
